Yard size and coverage
Manufacturer acreage ratings assume ideal conditions — flat ground, moderate grass. Give yourself margin: a mower rated for 2 acres is comfortable on about 1 to 1.5. Measure the grass you mow, since lot size includes the house and driveway.
Battery system
Swappable battery packs (EGO, Greenworks) double as power for handheld tools from the same system and let you extend runtime by adding packs. An integrated battery (Craftsman) means nothing to swap or store, but the pack is married to the mower. Check what charger is in the box: a dual-port turbo charger refills packs far faster than a basic wall charger.
Steering and deck
Zero-turns with lap bars maneuver tight around trees and beds; tractors with a steering wheel feel familiar to anyone coming from gas. EGO’s e-STEER splits the difference. A 42-inch deck fits through most gates; the 52-inch EGO is for open ground and needs wider storage.
