Smart home hubs exist to solve one problem: devices that speak different radio languages. Match the hub to the devices, and the rest gets easy.
Know the four protocols
Zigbee and Z-Wave are the two older mesh radios; Zigbee shows up in cheap sensors, bulbs and plugs, while Z-Wave is common in locks, dimmers and garage controllers. Matter is the new shared standard that lets certified devices work across ecosystems. Start with the devices you already own
